I am not good at rhythm games.
Or at least, I thought I wasn't good at them.
Honestly, I'm not sure what compelled me to try out UNBEATABLE. I think maybe with the end of my time at university in sight, I wanted to spend my free time trying out something new. I heard a lot of praise for this game, and figured it would be a great chance for me to give rhythm games another shot.
Right from the moment I began playing, this game took my full attention. For the next couple days, whenever I wasn't studying for exams, I was playing through the story mode. I'm usually not one to get completely sucked into a game like this. Usually I can only play a game for a couple hours at a time, but I was just incredibly compelled to finish this game. I'm avoiding details in this discussion, not because of spoilers really, but because I don't think any description I give can do the story justice. There are issues, obviously. The transition between scenes can be very abrupt, the middle section of the game has some pacing issues, and some characters aren't as fleshed out as they could have been. In the end, however, UNBEATABLE's story is so powerful and emotional, these feel like minor nitpicks in comparison. To anyone on the fence, I emplore you to consider picking up the game. It may not be for you, but I still think it's an experience that anyone who even has a passing interest should play. I give my praise to the entire team at D-CELL for this incredible game, one of the best I've played in a long time.
The main rhythm gameplay, especially in Arcade mode, is also very addicting. From what I understand, the two button control scheme and presentation is based on some other popular rhythm games, the main twist here being that obstacles can come from two sides of the screen. I've been steadily improving, and currently I'm settled around the expert level tracks. Anything above that is still too difficult for me, but I hope to change that as I keep practicing.
When the final credits rolled on the story mode, I was left in an immensely emotional state, and also with a drive to create something. I'm still in the middle of exam season as I write this, so I can't capitalize on this energy quite yet, but I am absolutely ready to use my spare time going forward building my creative skills. I'm not quite sure where this energy will go as of yet, whether it's towards this website, or improving at drawing, maybe getting back into music. Whatever it is, I hope to make something that matters to myself, and hopefully others.
